2015/16 Season Wrap Up

New job, new riding buddies, new gear, new adventures! The 2015/16 season was one for the books! Other than my epic road trip, I got a pretty good amount of days in at Bear, Mammoth, and Squaw. Working at Volcom has been a game changer. I finally found a company that is stoked on me snowboarding whenever I can. And on top of that, I have made a lot of new friends who love to ride as much as I do. (I've also managed to score some new gear!)

After 4 years of a drought, El Nino was extremely hyped up in the media. Although, it wasn't the El Nino I remember, it still delivered much more snow than the last few years and that is good enough for me! Somehow, I even managed to get Stacy to (but not on) the mountain a few times which is a victory in itself!

Here's a bunch of pictures of all the fun I had! And thanks to everyone who was a part of it!

The Ultimate Road Trip

This season my number one road dog, Anni, and I decided to go big or go home. We purchased the Mountain Collective Pass and planned a two week road trip around the included resorts. The plan was Reno>Snowbird, UT>Jackson Hole, WY>Sun Valley, ID>Squaw Valley,CA>Mammoth, CA>back to the beach. I also discovered the Road Trippers app to aid in our planning (which I highly recommend).

Timing was perfect. I work in production and we planned our trip according to Chinese New Year when my work basically stops for at least 2 weeks. I packed my bags, hopped in the car with my parents, and we headed to the happiest place on earth, Reno, NV.

I met Anni in Reno and we took off for Snowbird the next morning. It was January 28th and a heavy storm was hitting everywhere from Reno to Utah, but we managed to make great time and stock up on Cooks Extra Dry before getting to Utah.

The nightlife on a Sunday night in Utah is non existent, but the people were nice, the hotel was great, and the food was comforting. We stayed at one of the nicest Hampton Inns I have been to. It was affordable, we ended up getting one night for free, was about as close to the hill as possible, and had a top notch continental breakfast (which is all I ever really care about).

We headed to Snowbird with no clue of what we were getting ourselves into. After a quick wax, we went up the tram (super retro). The snow was dumping, the visibility was extremely low, we each took a few fun powder diggers, then lost each other. We ended up lapping some of the lower lifts due to try and maintain better visibility, but we also needed to spend some time inside considering it was about -5 degrees outside.

I always run hot and even after my time in Colorado, I have found it rare that I have ever needed insulated anything, but luckily I had scored some insulated Goretex mittens at work and I have never been so saved by one piece of gear. It was also the only time in my life I had wished I had insulated pants. My head gear included a baclava, a neck gator over that, and a helmet. I was also wearing an insulated jacket and 2 layers underneath that. UTAH IS COLD!

We rode a day and half at Snowbird and took off for Jackson Hole. I was looking forward to Jackson more than any of the other resorts and I am glad I was as excited as I was because the drive was BRUTAL. Everything was a breeze until we hit this weird road in Idaho that no one I know from Idaho has ever even heard of. We referred to it as "Anni's Ice Road Trucker Audition" and passed four Monsanto plants (seemed like a good place to hide them).

After about 6 hours we made it to the motherland, Jackson Hole, and we were not disappointed. We checked into our hotel, The Rustic Inn, that I had been drooling over pictures of since planning the trip. It was everything I hoped and dreamed it could be. After checking in, we were directed straight to the bar. No moving my car, no going to the room. We needed drinks and needed them fast. The decor was what my dreams are made of and the bar was stacked to the ceiling with booze. It didn't hurt that the bartender was a pretty good looking guy around our age either.

Jackson Hole Ski Resort didn't fail to impress either. The famous tram, the gondola, great chair access, and good, post storm, snow coverage. We missed the initial powder dump (that we were hitting in Utah), but the temps were so low that the snow was still awesome. It was -5 at the top of the tram! The other best part about out trip was that we were doing all weekday riding, so the lines were short, the runs were wide open, and the drinks were flowing. Jackson Hole is definitely a place for whiskey and debauchery. I knew this was a place I wanted to be when I heard that some cowboy was skiing with his gun, managed to lose the gun, and someone just turned it into lost and found like it was no big deal. Not to mention, the terrain was awesome and every time I lapped the gondola, I felt like I was on a different run. I went up the tram, but have to admit that I wussed out. The wind was blasting on top and a few people skied off a cliff not too long before and it got to my head. The view from the top was pretty all time though (and Anni is tougher than me and just went for it).

We ended our day of riding at the Mangy Moose Bar before returning to the Rustic Inn. After a dinner at the hotel bar, we ended with the wildest night of our trip. Some details will remain between Anni and I, but needless to say, I rate Jackson Hole nightlife a 10/10 for karaoke, whiskey, friendliness, and good looking men!

I left Jackson Hole with a hangover and a heavy heart. I was ready to quit my job and just stay there, but we still had one big stop left on our epic adventure, Sun Valley, Idaho. Anni's family was kind enough to let us stay at their house and it was stunning to say the least. After a reflective, tired, post Jackson Hole drive, we feasted like kings and got a well needed night's rest to gear up for the following day of riding.

Sun Valley makes Squaw look like a Motel 6. Diamond chandeliers hung throughout the main lodge among million dollar fireplaces and people dressed in Chanel one pieces. This place was the Ritz and we were two snowboarders from California coming off a week on the road. The terrain of mountains was much steeper than I expected which I appreciated. The views were impeccable and the lodge at the top was just as fancy as the one at the base.

Overall, it was probably about 97% skiers to 3% snowboarders and I had some guy look directly at me and ski into me anyways (I was fine and he ate shit). My time at Squaw also taught me how to have and deal with bad attitudes and aggression, but I not prepared for the vibes I received at Sun Valley. The Squaw attitude is more out of competition and a local mentality. The Sun Valley attitude was more just about being a dick, but to each their own. We had a great day and got to ride some of Anni's family's favorite runs (which were all super fun).

I was concerned that the attitude I dealt with on the hill might carry over into the town, but I could not have been more wrong. Any on hill douche baggery was instantly made up for with cheap beer, dive bars, and friendly locals. We had an awesome dinner at a swanky little restaurant, then hit the bars recommended by Anni's family. At Casino Bar, we met an Austrian ex-ski instructor named Karl who was absolute legend. People like Karl are the reason I love travelling. He had instructed people like John Wayne, the Kennedy's, and many others and had all the old photos to prove it. He has a world famous Burmese Python named Houdini who hit the news after he swallowed an electric blanket and survived the surgery to remove it. Karl also has a German Shepherd named Baron, which is always the quickest way to my heart. After a few drinks with Karl, we headed across the street to end our last night of our journey at an epic Johnny Cash cover band show.

Anni and I were nearing the end of our journey together as we headed back to Reno where Anni would split and head back to San Francisco and I would spend one more week in the mountains and on the road.

The final week of my adventure was split between Tahoe and Mammoth. I was pretty gassed by the time got back to Tahoe, but it is my second home and it makes my heart happier than any other place on earth. I got a day and a half in at Squaw and got to ride with some of my favorite people, lost some money at CBC as usual, shot some guns with JR, and partied my way through Tahoe City.

My time in Tahoe always goes too quickly and after a few days there, I headed down to Mammoth to meet up with the Surfside and Smith boys for On Snow demos and the last leg of my trip. I was back in the Southern California sun and got a decent day of riding in considering how hard Tahoe chewed me up and spit me out. We went to the annual Wave Rave party and rocked out to Los Mysteriosos. This year seemed a little more calm than some of the previous On Snows. Maybe we are getting older, maybe I was beat up from my trip, maybe we will have to see what we have left next year.

All in all, it was two of the best weeks of my life. I drove about 2,200 miles, met people who have left lasting impressions, rode some of the best terrain in the world, spent quality time with my favorite road dawg, karaokeed my ass off, ate a lot of pizza, saw all types of wildlife, and challenged my limits in as many ways as possible. I have been home for 3 months and there hasn't been a day that I haven't reminisced about this adventure and I can't stop dreaming about what next winter will bring.

Winter is Coming...

Winter is coming and we all know what that means.. I want all new gear (even though I can't afford it and do not need it). Here's my 15/16 winter dream kit-

Casie and Biggs Tahoe Takeover

When I left Tahoe, I was ready to go, but I have missed it every day of my life since I have been gone. It's so cheesy to say, but it is just one of those places that lives in your soul. I'm not sure if it's the wilderness, the parties, the views, the boys, the spirit, or a combination of all of them, but it is the most special place to me on Earth. Since starting at Volcom, I have been working my ass off and thought I needed a little mid summer vacation, so Casie and I headed to the motherland.

Casie had never been to Tahoe, so I was extra excited to take her with me and show her the ropes. In less that 5 days, we managed to participate in an art show, karaoke, go to the Dollar Point pool, shoot guns, spend time at Donner Lake, check out the Lupines and an epic sunset at Commons Beach, explore Squaw, and enjoy drinks and lunch on the Bridgetender patio. Here are some picture highlights of our drive and trip.

2014-15 Season Wrap Up

There was a week in October where the universe was not on my side. I didn't get a job that I really wanted, I got laid off from the job I had, and lost a family member all within about 7 days. But in true form, I had to focus on the positive, especially when it came to getting laid off. I have to say, I took the news like a champion (at least at first). The chick who called me into her office to deliver the news was not my favorite person anyways, so when she told me, I looked at her, shrugged, and told her, "Whatever, I already have my Cali4nia pass, so I guess my season just opened up." Of course when reality hit me about 10 mins later, I was fairly upset and in shock, but it wasn't anything a few cocktails and a Bay Club session couldn't fix.

I was pretty bummed on not getting this job I wanted as well. It was at an action sports company and I was itching to get back to snowboard land, but I ended up getting a solid chunk of riding in and got a job at Volcom (my dream company) instead in February and things couldn't have gone better! As the old saying goes, "Hindsight is 20/20."

Here's a little summary of people and events that made this snowless season great-

First off, my road dog, Anni Porteous. We hit Mammoth, Alpine, Squaw, Bear, and Summit! And if we are trying to have a positive outlook on the lack of snow this year, I would say the driving conditions were a breeze and we got to take her Prius quite a bit.

We hit up opening day at Mammoth. No snow, but always a party. I probably averaged about 5 laps (that's an opening day record for me). One of my good friends from Squaw came down, we drank lots of bloody mary's, we watched Mr. Plant (again) and had a blast!

Anni and I headed up to Tahoe between Christmas and New Years. Not my favorite time to snowboard, but who cares? I'll take any time in Tahoe I can get. I grew up skiing Alpine Meadows, but haven't been there since I was a kid, so when we got to spend a sunny day shredding there, it was awesome to be back in the old stomping grounds. Of course, I live for Squaw and we spent the next day there. The wind was high, the snow was low, the crowds were poppin, and I got as many Shirley laps in as possible. I also got to spend time with my old Surfside friend, Ricole and her boyfriend Kevin, which was epic in itself. It actually turned out to be one of the coldest weeks I have experienced in Tahoe in my entire life, which turns out to be perfect weather for the casino. It was about -14 at lake level with wind chill. Yikes!

Smith sponsored Surfside on their annual demo Mammoth trip and they were nice enough to bring me along. Every shop needs a token chick right? The whole trip was epic. The Wave Rave party had Led Zepagain playing and Mammoth Brewery on tap and everyone was rocking out in true form. I got to hang out with my favorite Smith guys and see a lot of people that I had been missing since I left Surfside. The riding was sticky, but fun, and I got to demo a bunch of cool gear from next season. I hopped back on a couple of Rome's and loved them. I always spend some time on Capitas and GNU's and enjoyed those as well. And even though I was riding Smith's coat tails, I had a chance to try some polarized Zeal goggles, which I always love. It was just an overall great week and I am always happy to see old faces and make new friends up there.

I started my new job at Volcom within a couple days of getting back from the Mammoth Surfside trip. It probably took a little time to get my brain working again, but not long after my start date, Volcom took all the employees to Bear. I took one lap and definitely called it my last day of the season, but I had a great time and nothing beats getting paid to snowboard and party. And those were basically the highlights of my season (not including a lot of day trips to Bear and Summit).

Between the job hunt, the snowboarding, the side jobs, the dog painting, and the lack of a good desktop computer, I failed to keep this blog up to date on my riding adventures, so here's a season recap in pictures of some highlights as well.

Hot Dawgz and Hand Rails

I headed up to Bear this past weekend for the Hot Dawgz and Hand Rails winter kick off extravaganza and epicness ensued. With a crew of some of my favorite people, a sweet cabin free of charge, a bottomless pit of whiskey and cheap beer, and some nice cold weather, we had a recipe for success.

can't have a bad time with a view like this.

After a $40 cab ride from only a mile away, we put our party pants on and enjoyed some serious spectating. It was great to see all the people I miss from my Surfside days. On the way out we decided we would just hitch hike or walk or catch a ride somehow and luckily we ran into some epic Volcom guys and managed to hitch a ride home (and have a party sesh in the Winnebago). The party continued on and turned out to be one hell of a good time.

Cali4nia Pass!

It finally happened! Bear Mountain & Snow Summit + Mammoth & June!!!! I've heard talk about this for a while and although I definitely hesitate about some mountain purchases, I think this could turn out quite well. Even though I wasn't a huge fan of Squaw getting purchased a few years ago, I was happy to see them team up with Alpine Meadows, Whistler, and a few other resorts and it's always a benefit to get more mountains on one pass. I think the collaboration of these resorts will lead to a more powerful union of Southern California snowboarding and will hopefully aid in resistance to the Vail superpower (nothing against Vail Resorts, I just think it's nice to see some independence). Teaming up has worked for Colorado, Tahoe, and now finally Southern California and I think it will be interesting to see how Bear and Mammoth influence each other...and probably create the most epic parks of all time.

Camping in Big Bear Round 2

I bought a Poler Napsack the other day and decided I must use is immediately, so Anni, Finn and I headed up to Serrano Campground in Big Bear. It was a quick spirit quest, but a fun and fulfilling one. We arrived Friday night and left Saturday afternoon, but definitely accomplished a lot in the short period of time.

One night of camping and my Jeep was packed full (thanks Mom). Although, we did use just about every essential that we brought with us:

Cooler

Tent

Poler Napsack

Sleeping bag

Blankets

Camping chairs (the best ones I have ever seen. They even had built in tables with mug holders)

One clothing bag each

S'mores fixings

Hot dogs and veggie dogs

Bullet whiskey

PRB

Ice

Home made, ready to cook breakfast burritos

Electric lantern

Camping self inflating air mattresses

Aluminum mugs and plates

Anni built the fire (in record time) and I set up the tent and we managed to eat as many s'mores as possible for dinner.

I have been Pinteresting a bit much lately and came across the genius idea of bringing breakfast burritos wrapped in foil to cook over the fire in the morning and I must say it was a success! We also had some hot dogs.

Our good friend, Butters, is a Big Bear native, and him and his epic grom daughter, Emerald, joined us for a fun filled day of activities. We headed to Boulder Bay, where we had a mini hike to and from the lake, changed our clothes and had a late lunch at Jasper's BBQ in the village.

We headed home around 3:30pm through the first rain I had seen in ages and it was the perfect way to end our journey. The smell of rain in the mountains is something I long for all summer. Sometimes we just need a little wilderness...and an adventurous friend, a great dog, and a cool hat.

Little Corona

Sometimes we get so caught up in travelling and going places, we forget how beautiful our own backyards can be. This past weekend, Jessica and I had a lunch date at our favorite place, Zinc, and hit the tide pools at Little Corona. It's been ages since I have been down there and I don't know why. Such a beautiful place (even though we found ourselves picking up trash).

Big Bear in the Summer

Although, all I want to do is camp every weekend, between Memorial Day and Labor Day, it is impossible for us weekend warriors to find a camp site that isn't booked. A few weeks ago one of my best friends from college (originally from Seattle and currently living in Monterey) was down in Newport for a visit. She had never been to Bear before and I was longing for a little fresh air, so we booked a night at the Motel 6 and enjoyed a day in the mountains! Close enough to camping, right?

Couldn't resist a photo op in front of this giant peace sign carving!

Go Camping

Some days we just remember that humans are not meant to sit at desks or be inside all day. The only cure? Getting balls deep in Mother Nature, shooting guns, drinking PBR, and sleeping under the stars. Here's a little photo throwback to some of my favorite camping times.

Bridal Showers

Wedding season is in full swing and apparently when you are 29, every person you know decides to get married. Minus the hole being burned in my wallet, I love weddings and all the festivities that go along with them; showers, bachelor/bachelorette parties, dress shopping, and anything that involves an open bar. Although, my specialty is snowboarding fashion, I feel like I am not doing to bad in the world of wedding clothes either. Luckily for me, I have a nice back stock of Volcom dresses that seem to be working out for showers, weddings, and parties. (And so do some of my friends!)

Packing for Cabo

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to attend to the most beautiful wedding I have ever been to for two of my favorite people, Casey Bunney and Brandon Flanders, in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. While day dreaming of beaches, pools, and fruity cocktails, I realized that I haven't flown anywhere in about a year and a half (which is crazy) and I haven't been on a vacation to anywhere warm in years. I got a little excited when I remembered I would be packing dresses and bikinis instead of snowboard jackets and boots, so I decided to do a little layout of my warm weather packing. It's pretty awesome to fit so much in one suitcase!

Not knowing what adventures I might end up on or clubs I might go out to, I chose to pack by occasion, instead of by amount of days I would be away. And overall, I'd say it worked out pretty well in the end.

The 4 B's

Well, it's close to 100 degrees, even at the beach, but luckily last weekend might have possibly been the most perfect beach day ever. After a morning session of what I like to call "Hangover Yoga" and some solid time at the mall, I rounded up some of my favorite girls for some much needed beach time.

My guide to the perfect summer day is following the 4 B's...

Beach-Maybe all of us don't live as close to the beach as others, but make a trip, lay out at the lake, cruise the river, hell, hit the pool. If there's sun and water, there's a promising day ahead.

Balboa all day every day

Balboa all day every day

Babes- Bring your friends!! Even if you just want to chill, if your friends are worth keeping around, no one minds if you read or take a nap. Or hang out and gossip and make plans to go wine tasting. All of these things entertain me. Not to mention, it's more fun (and less creepy) scoping out guys when you are with other people.

Stacy, Jessica, Me

Stacy, Jessica, Me

Booze- I know we all need to be healthy, but a little white wine or Cook's Extra Dry never hurt anyone on a hot day. And because I walk to the beach, it's totally acceptable. Just make sure you've got your water bottle too (and it's full of water, not vodka). Plus, you can get cute red cups like the ones we had or fun sippy cups! As long as they are plastic, anything goes. Oh yeah, and don't get an open container ticket.

Don't forget to pick up after yourself

Don't forget to pick up after yourself

Bocce- Feel free to replace bocce with other beach games like corn hole or paddle ball, but bocce is my current favorite. Hang out and throw balls! It's a little different on the sand then on the grass, but it is fun and entertaining and you can vary the level of difficulty by what direction you throw in and avoiding tourists as obstacles.

Team Blue Balls vs Team Fire Crotch

It just so happened that we were on B Street as well, so if you are in Newport, make it 5 B's. Most importantly, just go outside, dust off your favorite bathing suit, and have some fun with your friends!!!
